Rating system should be changed

The rating system should have been changed years ago as per all my letters. Because there are many that rate people's photo's very low (Slamming ) just because they are jealous, spiteful, and are obsessed.to receive an AC! etc...Being slammed by someone is degrading, annoying, and like they are slapping you in the face or attacking you! Yes! I know! I have been slammed for over 4 years now and she still does it. WU Know who it is but has never stop her??? I know of people that have left WU because of slamming and AC's being the cause of it. Getting rid or the Rating System will stop all the sickness of slamming to ALL of us. This will restore Harmony to this Lovey Photo Club to Everyone the way it Should Be! Ralfo. .

I know in the poll, the option of whether to allow the uploader to check a box as to whether they want to allow ratings on their photo was the least favored BUT it is the fairest of the three choices given. It's my opinion that the choice should be strictly left in the hands of the uploader as to whether he wants ANY ratings of ANY kind on his/her photo...whether it be Like or an actual 1-10 rating. Leave it up to the uploader.

For those who have commented who are not familiar with Facebook, the Like Button is not a scoring system but simply a way of telling the poster that his/her posting is appreciated by the person clicking on the like button. The system, if implemented on WU would eliminated the scoring system altogether and replace it with a system that tells the photographer who likes their photos. If some one doesn't like a photo, they don't need to do anything and no one's feeling get hurt. This is the idea implemented by Facebook some time ago and is the general idea Duane was suggesting.

Count me in. Ratings have devolved into either getting 10s from all your friends, or getting slammed by retards with nothing better to do with their time. Personally, I only 10 pix, even if they're not [coff!] "perfection". And as someone once said, WU has to decide what it wants to be when it grows up, a competitive place where 10-hounds and AC-hounds compete for 10s and ACs, and stomp off in a huff if they don't get them, or a nice *friendly* place where people can post pix, even of not-quite-picture-perfect shots of weather (flooded stormdrain or whatever) without getting slammed.

I tried to return a reply,but don't think it took....Thanks PSAnnie! Uhm,,how'bout, this....having a rating system where you can only rate a one-time only- '10',,,so,,,how many '10's you get determine how well liked an image is...so..5 '10's,,fine,,you get 100-'10's SUPER W@W!,,,NO '10's,,and I guess you better clean that lens off or remember to remove the lens cap....lol,,that or the system is 'experiencing technical difficulty'...:) Also,maybe some sort of rotation period,,it's not always fair either that images go by so quickly,,you would literally have to stay on W/U photo gallery all the time to see all these great shots,,And still keep the A/C feature too..oh well,,I like what Backward Guy said as well..all good input really..

I AGREE WITH RENO,Kennebunker,and the rest,,!! IT SEEMS MUCH FAIRER,and almost eliminates someone with a grudge or immature behavior, to spoil someone's 'ratings' by 'slamming' all the time,,and frankly we are sick of that! This is SUPPOSED to be a friendly e-environment,,and not a competition....I actually liked the old thermometer,that was really cool,,and related to the theme of this site,,,but I suppose the slammers could mess that up too.
I personally find that the animated ads slow my viewing speeds way down here as well,,that is very annoying to have to keep hitting the refresh or back and forward button to get back to the photo to vote...maybe it's just me...This is an awesome sight,but needs a few tweaks to make it even better..I also agree with Heidrun and Minnesota Mom..All great suggestions here!! We have enough 'negativity' in the world,,why not have a fun place to relax,hang our hats and scarves and enjoy each other's company without ratings....sure,I like to know that a photo I put up meets with the general approval,,but sometimes they don't,but I don't want to feel like I failed a test or competing in the Olympics,,:) to get 'slammed' down in ratings that can never be brought back up,,etc,etc....TWO-THUMBS UP! to the person who put this comment stream/topic together,,time for a positive CHANGE!!!:) -

Since my self worth has never been effected by photo ratings, low ratings never bothered me. Let me play the devil's advocate: What will happen when someone doesn't get as many "likes" as they think they deserve? As far as a counter idea goes... I don't see how that could be an indicator of how well liked a photo is. I often click on one and find a photo that I would not comment on or rate. Sometimes I just start at the top of a category and click on each photo showing. I leave comments and ratings on some and move on. Clicking on it and viewing it doesn't mean I think it's a good photo. The number of views would only mean that someone clicked on it to see if they liked it or not. Done being the devil's advocate.
I would like to see no ratings system at all. No numbers, counters, or likes. Just keep the comment section...that's where the fun is. I can tell someone that I "like" their photo in the comment section, and I can tell them why I like it. -

The number of views idea would appeal to me as an indicator of appeal - and perhaps to those who feel the need to quantify things somehow. Comparing that to the number of "likes" would help a photographer self assess the image without allowing slammers to get their digs in!

I think that it would be great to change the ratings system to a 'Like' button similar to that used on facebook. I've never liked the ratings system -- it's like a photograph is being given a 'grade' and most of us on WU aren't professional photographers and therefore, aren't qualified to be giving high or low ratings, period. Truthfully, one of the reasons I stopped posting photos was because of the ratings system -- the 'number' that a photo ends up really means nothing.

I think it would be nice to have a "Like" button or a "thumbs up" button, but NOT a "Dislike or thumbs down" button....in addition, I would like a button that shows the number of times a photo has been viewed.

PokeSaladAnnie, I think it would still be only members would get to vote. Folks who are not members wouldn't vote, as it is now.
Perhaps the voting option would only be for 'like' votes, eliminating the possibility of members who don't identify themselves from 'slamming.'
I like the idea of how many views on a photo as well, as fotomacc suggested!
